The Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles is a must-see for anyone interested in learning more about human rights and the Holocaust. The museum is dedicated to promoting tolerance and understanding among all people and features exhibits on a variety of topics related to human rights and social justice.
One particularly moving exhibit is the “Wall of Remembrance.” Visitors to this exhibit see ten glass panels etched with the names of Holocaust victims. Under each name is a lighted candle embedded in the glass, which visitors can turn on as a tribute. It is impossible not to be moved by seeing so many people’s lives commemorated this way; it becomes easier to understand the scale and senselessness of the Holocaust.
The museum also houses exhibits on many other topics, including the Civil Rights Movement in America, genocide in Rwanda and Darfur, world religions, hate crimes against gays and lesbians, female genital mutilation in Africa, etc. They are all thought-provoking in their own right. While I found each of them compelling in its own way, one in particular that I found especially interesting was the exhibit on “The Power of Words.” This exhibit looks at how language can be used to incite hatred and violence, as well as to promote peace and understanding.
In addition to the exhibits, the Museum of Tolerance also offers educational programs for students of all ages, as well as film screenings, lectures, and workshops. If you’re interested in learning more about human rights and social justice, the Museum of Tolerance is definitely worth a visit.
